I remained utterly still inside a small hide until the rhino came within reach of my wide-angle lens. With famously poor eyesight and downwind from me, he had no idea I was there. There is something remarkable about being fully immersed in their world, observing without forcing interaction. When I finally released the shutter, it startled him, and he quickly turned and jogged away.

The strongest photographs are those that cannot be recreated. I cannot say if this will be remembered as a definitive image, but I am confident nothing quite like it will be made again. My goal is always to magnify the subject’s presence and status while maintaining a sense of intimacy, allowing the viewer to experience a fraction of the emotions I felt just a few feet from this incredible animal.
