James Lewin is an internationally acclaimed photographic artist based in Kenya. He has built a reputation for creating timeless masterpieces that bring a unique perspective into the lives of some of the world's most iconic inhabitants.
Entirely self-taught, Lewin picked up a camera after working with anti-poaching and research units on the front line of conservation in Kenya. Soon after, he abandoned a real estate career in London to pursue his passion for wildlife with his camera in hand. Lewin has since received more than 25 international awards for his evocative work.
Exclusively working in the wild, Lewin devotes weeks at a time to gain breathtaking proximity that results in portraits that carry the depth and emotional presence as human portraiture. Avoiding telephoto lenses, he works on foot under ranger supervision or from modified vehicles, capturing a rare intimacy and connection with his subjects seldom seen in the genre.

“It wasn’t until I was submerged in a waterhole in southern Kenya, my head just above the surface as elephants towered above me, that I felt an undeniable urge to make a photograph. That moment marked a turning point in my life and continues to influence the way I photograph today.”
James’ connection with wildlife conservation was the inspiration behind picking up a camera. Protecting Africa’s wild places and the species that call them home has always been at the heart of his work, with proceeds from every artwork sold supporting conservation efforts across Africa.
Over the years, James has partnered with organisations working to secure a future for wildlife and communities across the continent, including Tsavo Trust, Big Life Foundation and Wild Africa.
His conservation efforts have focused particularly on protecting Africa’s last remaining Super Tusker elephants, supporting the preservation of vital wildlife corridors, and more recently helping fund large-scale media campaigns that promote coexistence.

My journey into the safari industry was completely unexpected. It all began with a single Instagram message five years ago.
Since then, I've been quietly leading bespoke safaris, with every trip coming through repeat guests and personal recommendations. As demand has continued to grow, I've decided to make my safaris publicly available for the first time by introducing them to my website.
