BENEATH THE BAOBAB
-
I was immediately drawn to this lioness. She is one of the most striking lionesses I have encountered in the Maasai Mara, and I felt her beauty alone was enough to carry the image. A cloudless morning, often challenging for photography, proved advantageous here, creating a clean, uncluttered frame and an immediate connection with her piercing gaze.
She was a member of the pride led by Scar, arguably the most famous lion in the Maasai Mara. Renowned for his longevity, resilience, and distinctive facial scar, Scar survived numerous challenges throughout his life, including territorial battles and serious injuries. Despite his declining condition in later years, he continued to command remarkable loyalty and respect from his pride, who protected and provided for him long after he could no longer hunt effectively himself.
To create this perspective, I used a remote camera housed in a custom-built protective unit and positioned at ground level. Lions are notoriously unpredictable around remote cameras, sometimes ignoring them completely, other times treating them as a new toy. On this occasion, patience paid off. The lioness approached perfectly, allowing me to capture an intimate portrait that reflects both her beauty and the enduring legacy of one of Africa's most iconic lion prides.
