NO ESCAPE

In the early stages of each year, the Southern Serengeti Plains of Ndutu come to life, with thousands of wildebeest giving birth across the vast plains after making the long journey home from the Maasai Mara in Kenya. Over 100,000 years ago, nearby erupting volcanoes spread ash across these plains, causing ever-luscious grasses supporting the immense biodiversity within The Serengeti. Being in Ndutu during the calving season was an unforgettable experience, with the sheer quantities of wildlife being challenging to comprehend. At certain moments, I felt like I was witnessing Africa as it once was thousands of years ago.
2023 is the first year I visited Ndutu, and my first trips to new locations are usually for familiarisation with the hope of being inspired to return with a specific image in mind. I had never planned to come away with this intimate and unnerving image.
Photographing lions is never straightforward because they spend up to 21 hours resting each day, leaving a tiny window of opportunity that often arises once the light has disappeared. The moments leading up to and following sunrise offer the best chance to find active, alert lions, and this was one of those mornings where everything came together at the right time. It doesn't get much better than photographing a fully grown lioness staring right at you moments after sunrise in soft light beneath dramatic skies with a 35mm lens.
Ndutu, I will certainly be back.
