SERENGETI SHALL NEVER DIE
-
The Serengeti has given me some of my most defining photographs, yet it remains one of the hardest places to create something truly exceptional. Its sheer abundance of wildlife makes good images easy — but great ones take time, patience, and, in this case, four years of searching.
Since my first visit, I had imagined this exact moment. After countless days in the field - and four dedicated years returning to the same landscapes - it finally came together earlier this year, after four patient days with a dominant male and his pride. Lions sleep for nearly twenty hours a day, and this scene lasted only seconds, a fleeting gift that was all about being in the right place at the right time.
Working in my signature close-proximity style, without a telephoto lens, allowed the raw power and emotion of this lion to fill the frame. The dramatic storm sweeping across the plains became the final stroke of luck - even if it meant being stranded in the mud for hours afterwards.
If I could photograph only one place for the rest of my life, it would be the Serengeti. Its horizons seem endless, its wildness ancient and untouched. Every departure leaves me longing to return.
