The Serengeti is home to some of Africa’s most formidable male lions, and Bob Jr of the Utafiti Pride was among the most impressive. Over several visits, I spent extended time in his presence, working to create intimate yet imposing portraits that reflected his authority. To serve him justice, it was essential to photograph him from below eye level - a perspective that conveys his magnificence.

I will never forget the moment he approached, walking within just two metres as I lay out of a modified vehicle. The final image captures him as the ruler he was, placing the viewer within his world, stripped of comfort, confronted by power, and fully immersed in his presence.
