The Eastern Serengeti is a land that makes you feel small, a horizon so wide it feels difficult to comprehend. This has become one of their last refuges and the numbers reveal a sad story: roughly 7,000 remain in Africa, and they’ve already disappeared from over 90% of the places they once called home. Only 5% of cubs reach adulthood. The margins they live on are razor-thin.

Over the 10 days, we encountered 19 different cheetahs, but this single, quiet moment is the one that mattered. We found a female hunting, but what stopped me wasn’t the pursuit; it was the stillness before it. A pause in a world that rarely offers any.

These are the moments I search for: when everything falls silent and the subject exists in its own private universe. It’s in that silence that photography becomes something more than observation.

Across these plains, termite mounds rise like sculptures, each one a stage waiting for a story. For cheetahs, they are vantage points. For me, they are a chance at intimacy in a landscape built on distance. In a place where life moves at speed and survival is an uncertain calculation, this brief alignment of light, solitude and subject felt like a gift — one of those seconds you carry with you long after the dust has settled.
