ACROSS THE DRY LAKE
-
What I love the most about this image is that it portrays a moment that has occurred for thousands of years. Very little would change regardless of when it was taken, and black and white helps accentuate the scene's timelessness. Lake Amboseli formed during the Pleistocene era, and wild animals have roamed across this land for millennia. So much of our world is becoming increasingly unrecognisable, making it invigorating to be immersed in surroundings that remind us of times long ago.
Amboseli is renowned for its elephant herds and majestic tuskers, who traverse between the park's water sources and adjoining conservancies. Several other species also make this unique journey, driven by the park's limited food resources throughout the dry season.
Working from ground level with a medium telephoto lens was instinctive to enlarge the zebras, who were some distance behind the giraffe. Working with a wider lens from closer proximity would have made the zebras small distractions rather than features. The building storm, combined with the movement of animals, adds a biblical feel, reminding us of the story of Noah's Ark.
