THE HALFWAY HOUSE
-
After spending the early morning following a herd of 50 elephant crossing the dry lakebed in Amboseli National Park, we began scanning the horizon for new opportunities appearing through the mirage. Soon, we spotted a group of giraffe in the distance, which was an exciting find, as large groups here are not common.
Predicting the waterhole they would visit, we drove ahead and positioedn the vehicle so I could lie beneath it before the giraffes arrived. Pre-positioning was vital since giraffes are incredibly easy to spook.
Having an animal that is notoriously difficult to approach walk straight towards us and behave as if we were not there is a moment I will always cherish, and it stands as a reminder that patience in wildlife photography is always key.
I spent over an hour under the car watching each giraffe take its turn to awkwardly stretch down for water while others kept watch, as I waited for a composition to present itself. The moment a far-off giraffe crossed the frame provided the opportunity to create an extra layer within this impressive scene.
Life for most species in the dry season is tough. After finishing drinking at the swamp, they immediately begin their return journey. The waterhole is a halfway house, as there is no food there. Each day, animals of all kinds must march across the dusty expanse to reach water before making the same journey back in search of food.
