GUARDIANS OF THE PLAINS
-
Many images in the series took years to complete, due to the time and patience required to first capture wildlife in the wild. Each animal was photographed as if the warriors were already there, searching for compositions and expressions that would feel natural beside them.
This particular image, however, was created only moments apart. Somito, the remarkable warrior who has since become a close friend, was with me at the time. Once the lion moved to a safe distance, we captured the second frame almost immediately.
For me, this image stands as a proud representation of how both Maasai men and lions are both warriors in their own right. It holds countless memories of the weeks I spent with Somito and the other extraordinary Maasai warriors. It’s remarkable how deep a bond can form without many words, a connection built purely on mutual respect and shared moments in the wild.
Somito speaks only Maasai, so all communication had to flow through broken Swahili and translations, something I initially thought would be a huge challenge. But working with these genuine Maasai from remote regions, who have never engaged with social media or the modern world, I realised they needed little direction at all. They simply revealed themselves as the proud individuals they are. That authenticity left a lasting impression on me, and it’s something I deeply admire.
