THE BOY AND THE GENTLE GIANT
-
When I photographed Craig in this moment, I had envisioned placing a proud Maasai warrior beside him. But as the image took shape, I felt it would speak more powerfully with a child, gazing up at the colossal tusker in quiet wonder. The result is a poignant encounter, as if Craig is greeting the young boy by the water’s edge.
This image was created outside formally protected areas, on Maasai lands where Craig has roamed in peace and safety for decades. The Maasai have played an extraordinary role in his protection, and he remains a much loved and respected figure within the surrounding villages. Samson, the young boy seen here, lives only a few hundred metres from where this image was captured. Craig has been part of his life since the day he was born.
The Maasai lands surrounding Amboseli are changing rapidly, which means the traditional ways of life are too. Recent government land subdivisions and threats from development and agriculture have placed this landscape and its cultures at greater risk than ever before. Big Life Foundation has done incredible work by continuing to lease hundreds of thousands of acres of Maasai land, allowing traditional lifestyles to thrive alongside wildlife, before development and agriculture remove all recognition of a once-vast wild landscape.
My hope is that Samson grows up to be an ambassador, not only for his remarkable culture, but for the iconic creatures his people have long coexisted with.
