THE LAND THAT MADE US ONE
-
The title feels especially fitting for this piece. Craig, the famous elephant known to so many spends most of his days within just a few hundred metres of the people shown.
Craig is not only beloved by photographers and travellers across the world, but also deeply respected by the Maasai community who share their land with him. His presence has brought opportunity and pride to many local families, with thousands of visitors coming to see him each year. The Maasai people have played a vital role in safeguarding Craig. It’s hard to imagine any poacher daring to come near him, knowing the Maasai keep such a devoted watch over this magnificent elephant.
One man in particular has dedicated himself to Craig’s protection more than anyone else - David Moipei. A true legend, David spends almost every waking hour with Craig. I’m deeply grateful for his unwavering commitment to these elephants, and for his invaluable help in making this photograph possible. Nobody knows Craig better than David, and it’s been a pleasure to work with him for a number of years.
